Poem: What a Girl is

Who does the world say we are?

They say girls belong on billboards

rather than ballots.

They say straight hair and long eyelashes make the perfect girl.

They say we can be whatever we want to be,

yet we get paid 70 cents to his dollar no matter how hard we work.

Magazines try to change our everything,

but I just want to be me.

But,

we are not objects.

Ladies are not dolls.

We are humans.

Don’t try to put us in an art museum and expect a free gallery walk.

We don’t have price tags.

Our worth is greater than any number you can put on a checkbook.

We are not cats in a cage.

Our words are sharper than claws,

so don’t try to put a number on our worth.

Guys don’t care about our degrees,

only about what they see.

Girls are not trophies,

so quit putting  beauty on a shelf.

Real men don’t hurt women.

Don’t try to dress our worth in makeup,

because I am dressed in my intelligence.

Who does the world say we are?

It doesn’t matter

because it is who we say we are.

So who do you say I am?
